It’s amazing to me how every organism on our planet is genetically programed to survive at all costs. Sometimes organisms can’t adapt and become extinct. But fundamentally each organism genetically mutates to survive. I mean ‘fundamentally’ at a basic biological level: the changes that occur happen within the cells. Organisms are also what is in biology called “opportunistic.” If a seed normally grows in lush soil, but lands in a clump of dry soil, it will still try to sprout and thrive. Of course natural and man made changes in the environment sometimes happen so fast that organisms can’t adapt quickly enough. But that’s a topic for another day.
Below, some opportunistic plants, and of course, a few sprigs of weeds as well. (A case can be made that what we consider weeds are the most opportunistic of all plants.)
